Distress Tolerance: IMPROVE

Self-soothe is about the body; distract is about dragging ourselves away from distress; improve is about doing anything you can to make the moment just a little bit better (or a lot, if possible!). We remember how to improve the moment with another helpful acronym:


I - imagery

M - meaning

P - prayer/spirituality

R - relaxation

O - one thing in the moment

V - vacation

E - encouragement

Homework:

Take the list of encouraging phrases you crafted during practice and put some of these phrases in spaces where you will see them. Every time you come across an encouraging phrase, say it out loud and notice what comes up when you take a moment out of your day to change your narrative to something more uplifting.
