I am more than excited to welcome you to the very first skill video in our series! Join Sam & I in a discussion of the first core mindfulness skill, WISE MIND. This skill is foundational to all other DBT skills. If we don’t know what state of mind we are in, we run the risk of getting swept up in emotion and acting solely on our impulses or rigidly adhered to logic and reason, risking loss of joy & connection.

Skill of the day: WISE MIND

Join us as we talk about the components WISE MIND, how we use this skill in our every day lives, and how to implement WISE MIND practice. We understand that this video got a little lengthy, so see below for time stamps to spend time on the pieces that may be most useful to you.

WISE MIND mindfulness practice: 1:05 to 4:23

Didactic: 5:10 to 15:27

Practical application: 15:27 to 25:30

Homework: 25:30 to end

Grab your handouts (available below), get comfortable, and come find your WISE MIND with us.

WISE MIND Homework

Short on time and don't have space to watch the whole video? Watch the didactic and engage with the following over the week:

(1) Set a reminder on your phone to check in with yourself at the same time every single day this week.

At this time (every day!), ask yourself: Do I feel centered right now? In what ways has logic mind shown up in my life today? Where have I noticed emotion mind? When & how have I stayed in touch with my inner wisdom? What do I need right now to center myself?

(2) In response to the last question consider trying on the following practices:

Replay the WISE MIND mindfulness practice at the beginning of the video or any of the other mindfulness practices listed on handout 3A in the DBT Skills Manual.

Grab a sheet of paper, make three columns, and write "Logic Mind", "Wise Mind", and "Emotion Mind" at the top of the columns. Write the details of your experience, putting facts in logic mind and emotions and urges in emotion mind. Then, write your values in "wise mind" and any solutions that reflect the synthesis of logic mind and emotion mind.
